Preventing the Effects of Land-based Sediment on our Near-Shore Reefs: Success, Challenges, and What Lies Ahead

Maui Nui Marine Resource Council was happy to welcome two guest speakers to showcase how land-based sediment control can protect our marine resourses.  Melora Purell presented on the effects and challenges of the Pelekane Bay Watershed Project and how this has helped to restore the ecosystems of Pelekane Bay.   Mike Field presented information on the threats to Hawaii’s coral reefs with a focus on land-based pollution – and the road ahead: what threats are there in the future? How will climate change affect these systems?
