Communications, Community Outreach and Development Manager

About this position:

Under the general supervision of the Executive Director, our Communications, Community Outreach and Development Manager leads and manages MNMRC’s community outreach, marketing and promotional programs to build public awareness of our mission, vision and accomplishments, and promote support of our organization. Our Communications, Community Outreach and Development Manager leads fundraising initiatives including securing donations, grants and other support for MNMRC’s programs and projects.

The Communications, Community Outreach and Development Manager role is currently virtual.

What you’ll be doing:

In this role, you’ll be using your exceptional communication and writing skills, and your experience in fundraising, public relations and outreach, to transform your love of the ocean into engaging messaging that inspires public support of our vision of clean ocean water, healthy coral reefs and abundant native fish for the islands of Maui County. The ideal candidate for this position is a strong self-starter with an entrepreneurial spirit, a positive can-do attitude, strong collaboration skills and a desire to take initiative and ensure excellence.

Responsibilities:
• Manages and updates MNMRC’s outreach/public relations and fundraising strategy to continually broaden awareness of MNMRC’s work, strengthen MNMRC’s brand identity across key stakeholder audiences and generate funding for all MNMRC projects and programs.
• Ensures consistent professionally presented messaging through all marketing and public relations channels.
• Writes all print and electronic branded materials, including MNMRC’s website, electronic newsletter and other electronic communications, as well as flyers, brochures, press releases, blog posts and articles about MNMRC.
• Utilizes programs including Canva, MailChimp and GiveWP to design and create MNMRC’s electronic newsletter, news releases, website content and social media. Hires and manages graphic designers and programmers when needed, to ensure that all of MNMRC’s printed and electronic materials are professional and strategically aligned with our brand and mission.
• Serves as the primary media contact for external media inquiries. Actively cultivates and builds positive relationships with media outlets to ensure coverage of MNMRC’s programs, special events, public announcements, and other projects.
• Maintains and builds mailing lists, including for MNMRC’s e-newsletter and news releases.
• Leads and supports the planning and coordinating of MNMRC events as needed. Promotes events via social media, events calendars, news releases, media interviews and other outlets. Writes and prepares displays, talking points, speeches, presentations and other supporting material as needed for events and outreach opportunities.
• Oversees the strategy and messaging of MNMRC’s website. Provides compelling reasons for Maui visitors, residents and stakeholders to visit and re-visit the MNMRC website. Updates copy and enacts simple design changes. Coordinates more complex design changes with website developer.
• Manages all of MNMRC’s social media channels. Creates content and increases audience engagement. Monitors results and responds to public questions and comments.
• Plans and implements fundraising strategies, campaigns and activities. Builds engagement and grows revenue through the cultivation of strong community and corporate partnerships, and compelling communications with donors and patrons. Develops and conducts fundraising campaigns, including identification, procurement and promotion of premium incentives. Develops strategies to attract new donors, promote repeat donations, retain donors and move donors to increasing levels of support.
• Creates a calendar of email and other promotional appeals. Writes, edits and designs electronic, print and social media fundraising appeals.
• Writes thank you letters and other communications to donors. Works closely with MNMRC’s staff to ensure timely delivery of all thank you letters and premium gifts to donors. Coordinates and sends end-of-year contribution statements to donors.
• Researches and identifies potential grant funders for MNMRC’s projects. Conducts necessary research to pursue grant funding and write compelling grant proposals. Works with Programs and Operations Manager to develop grant narratives, budgets and timelines, prepare materials for submission and produce timely and complete grant performance reports.
• Hires, supervises and coordinates contractors, including designers and printers, to ensure timely on-budget delivery of projects and strategically on-target materials, signage and campaigns.
• Identifies marketing and outreach opportunities that help advance MNMRC’s mission, including outreach to promote visitor behaviors that protect Maui’s reefs and wildlife during ocean recreation activities.
• Engages with local and state agencies as well as foundations and donors to fund and implement campaigns; develops strategies and creative concepts; hires and supervises contractors (graphic designers, social media marketing specialists, printers); maintains data on campaign expenditures and results; prepares news releases and reports on campaigns.
• Conducts advocacy (including letters, testimony, etc.) on issues relating to marine conservation as approved by the Executive Director.
• Identifies challenges and emerging issues in the marine conservation nonprofit sector and at MNMRC. Works with the board and staff to recognize internal and external communications opportunities and solutions, and define and execute appropriate strategies to support them.
• Maintains flexibility and responsiveness to maximize expected/unexpected opportunities to promote MNMRC.
• Provides support to the Executive Director and other MNMRC staff as requested.

You’ll need to have:
• BA/BS in journalism, communications or related field or equivalent experience
• Minimum of 3-5 years’ experience in public relations, fundraising, grant-writing, advocacy and communications
• Exceptional writing and storytelling skills and the ability to communicate with a variety of audiences and stakeholders
• Demonstrated ability to develop successful fundraising campaigns.
• Solid skills in using Microsoft Office Suite. Experience with Canva, MailChimp and GiveWP a plus
