Understanding Coral Reef Condition to Support Management Decisions

Since 2023, the Maui Nui Marine Resource Council has been surveying coral reefs in South Maui.  These surveys follow the CRAMP (Coral Reef Monitoring and Assessment Protocol) developed by the University of Hawaii and used by the DLNR Division of Aquatic Resources.  Data from these surveys is shared with DAR and HIMARC, a research program at University of Hawaii.

CRAMP surveys are repeated in the same area each year with the goal of evaluating reef health over time.  We hope that as restoration projects above these sites improve water quality, we will also see improved reef health indicators reflected in our survey data.

FAHU surveys give a general view of a reef area. We are focusing assessing the nearshore, shallow habitats in South Maui to help fill data gaps for DAR while also building an understanding of the state of the habitat most affected by land-based stressors.
